The presidency has published a website (http://www.se2009.eu/en). The site also provides a specific section on gender equality and non-discrimination as well as on their working agenda regarding Gender Equality.

Rashida Manjoo, advocate of the High Court of South Africa and a former commissioner of the Commission on Gender Equality will succeed Yakin Ertürk in the position of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, its Causes and Consequences. The special rapporteur undertakes fact-finding country visits, submits annual reports on the subject of violence against women and transmits urgent appeals and communications to states regarding alleged cases of violence against women.

At a symposium in Vienna on June 8th 2009 the OSCE Secretariat's Gender Section launches a compilation of good practices for combating violence against women in the OSCE region.

Criminal prosecution in cases of rape is differently regaluated within the European Union. Liz Kelly and Corinna Seith present their new study and draw attention to challenges within the EU.

The conference "active against forced marriage" presents recommendations, and good practice examples to prevent and intervene in the case of forced marriage. It will take place on 29th April 2008 in Brussels, Hanse Office.

The final conference of this two year Daphne project “Breaking the Taboo - violence against elder women” will take place on 18 Mar 2009, 18.3.2009 in the City Hall of Vienna.

The fifty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women takes place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 2 to 13 March 2009.

28 October 2008 - FemCities: Expert conference on reducing the gender pay gap

This year’s FemCities conference asks “How can we close the gender pay gap?” and “Who will benefit?”. Experts from the fields of administration, business and science will present current facts and figures, scientific findings as well as European models and approaches to the relevant players. Various options administration and business have to close the gender pay gap will also be discussed.

In September 2007, the 1st Black European Women's Congress, initiated by AFRA-International Center for Black Women's Perspectives (Austria) and co-organised by Tiye International (The Netherlands), took place in Vienna. It brought together more than 100 Black Women from 16 EU Member States, Switzerland and the USA. The Vienna Declaration, one of the key outcomes of Congress, emphasizes the crucial role that Black Women play in economic, political, cultural and social respect in Europe and underlines the determination to implement and mainstream Black Women’s Empowerment in Europe.
Within the context of the European Year for Intercultural Dialog the official launching of the Black European Women’s Council (BEWC) will take place on September 9, 2008 at the premises of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels.

In July 2008, the Commission put forward a comprehensive package of initiatives. It represents a new commitment to social Europe and consists of an integrated approach bringing together various policies. The Renewed Social Agenda follows a broad public consultation launched by the Commission in 2007 to take stock of Europe's changing social reality.
