The Campaign Against Domestic Violence
Violence against women is one of the most serious forms of gender-based violations of human right. Despite significant achievements to combat violence against women and domestic violence, it is still widespread at all levels of society in all Council of Europe member states. The Council iof Europe and the Steering Committee for the Equality between Women and Men (CDEG) was active in the field of protecting women from domestic violence. In 2006 a Task Force was built up, where eight national experts developed the idea of a Council of Europe Campaign to Combat Violence against Women, including Domestic Violence. The campaign was apporved by the Committee of Ministers of the Coucil of Europe in June 2006 and the campaign was launched in November 2006 in Madrid.
The aims of the campaign are to raise awareness that violence against women is a human rights violation, to urge member states to demonstrate political will by providing resources to combat violence against women, and to promote the implementation of effective measures for preventing and combating violence against women.
In the framework of the campaign the Council of Europe will carry out a series of regional information and awareness raising seminars, meetings of the national focal points and activities to involve national parliaments. The 46 member states will appoint a high-level official and national focal point that co-operate with the Council of Europe during the campaign.
The campaign started in November 2006 and will end in March 2008.
