More information (scope of activities, studies, projects, etc.)
At Berkeley, ten young journalists started work on the project this past spring, in a graduate seminar and reporting class, “Transition to What?”, taught by award-winning international correspondent Sandy Tolan. In close consultation with TOL, the class framed the main issues and began identifying profile subjects. They were also paired off with TOL’s correspondents, with whom they would write their stories.

After careful story identification and planning, the Berkeley journalists then traveled to Prague for a two-day editorial session in late March where they met their TOL counterparts. The two-person student/correspondent teams then departed Prague to do on-the-ground reporting and background research in seven countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Two weeks later, the Berkeley students returned to Prague for a final “debriefing” session before returning to the United States. The double-bylined stories were produced for print, Internet, and broadcast outlets in both the U.S. and Europe. Some have already been published in the Christian Science Monitor and the San Francisco Chronicle. TOL will be rolling out the pieces throughout the summer and fall. Links to several that have already been published are below, as well as details of upcoming articles.

For TOL, the project offered an opportunity to develop new ties to a strong academic journalism program in the United States and, through the publication of the stories in U.S. newspapers, increase our visibility in what is a major market for TOL. For our correspondents, who normally work independently, they were able to get a taste of the U.S. journalism concept of team reporting, and they were able to learn new reporting skills and new approaches to feature writing. TOL and the Graduate School of Journalism are grateful to our sponsors on both sides of the Atlantic for bringing this unique project to reality.
